By man’s basic nature he lives for himself with no regard for his Creator and only seeks to better his neighbor if it is for his advancement. So, when placing value on others, the ultimate deciding factor is how his neighbor can advance his interests. By this mindset, value is placed on individuals by their contribution which according to a worldly perspective stems from a person’s stature, wealth, and influence.
However, to combat this mindset our legal origins protect all individuals based on their intrinsic worth regardless of education level, skill set, material possessions, or rank in society. For this reason and knowing that we are all created in God’s image by His careful design the Founders said in the Declaration of Independence which is part of the organic law of Maryland that we are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights; and that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. They go on to say that governments are instituted among men to secure these rights.
In our original Bill of Rights, the Founders clearly stated in the Fifth Amendment that an individual shall not be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law. An almost identical statement is made in the 14th Amendment which prohibits any state from once again depriving any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law. Article 24 of the Declaration of Rights found in the Maryland Constitution also requires due process by requiring that a person face their peers before losing any of their liberties and as said in the Fifth and 14th Amendments their life, liberty, or property. When words are spoken repeatedly it is a good sign that the writer wants us to pay close attention. From these writings, it is obvious that our founders understood that God carefully planned and formed human life for His purposes which He determined in advance; therefore no one should compromise the rights that He has bestowed to humanity.
It is also important that we look at what man has discovered through science. For one, the law of biogenesis says that species produce of their like kind. So, regardless of how small the product of conception may be, it follows that the product is of that species. They byproduct of human sexual encounters are no exception. Beginning at fertilization the unborn, is a distinct, living, whole human being with a unique DNA structure.
This unfortunately is an inconvenient truth for many in our culture. However, an organization headed up by Harford County Resident, Jody Ward known as People for Equal Protection by principles in our founding documents, science, and Biblical Truth are insisting that the byproduct of conception even at its earliest stages is human. With that being the case the unborn, like anyone else is entitled to the same liberty protections.
Finding it so hard to avoid this truth and reality, Mrs. Ward realized there was no way she could support the pragmatic prolife efforts advanced by other organizations. She saw that other approaches like parental notification requirements, requirements for ultrasounds, and clinic regulations may have created hurtles but still permitted abortion and in the end deny the humanity of the unborn. Mrs. Ward came to realize that equal protection, or abolition, is the only just response to the crime of abortion. She says only an equal protection bill is both just, conforming to God’s Law, the Constitutional, protections found in the Bill of Rights, and in state constitutions such as the Maryland Declaration of Rights.
People for Equal Protection is a grassroots group of people who agree that equal protection under law must be restored to the unborn. While not officially affiliated with any other groups, there are abolition/equal protection groups across the country whom they correspond. According to Mrs. Ward her organization presented an Equal Protection Forum in Annapolis for Legislators on March 4, 2020. This has resulted in conversations with Dan Cox and other legislatures which have been promising. They plan to further educate the legislatures and the public to generate support for their legislation and to ultimately find a bill supporter who understands equal protection.
