To many of us, the question in the title of this post might make us think of lyrics to hymns or songs like “A Firm Foundation.” Also, scriptures like Ephesians 2:19-20, where Christ is described as the Chief Cornerstone of God’s House, may come to mind. This is an important scripture to remember as we live our Christian lives because we don’t always make Jesus the object of our heart’s affection, and this makes us forget the centrality He is to have in our lives. Not only that, it’s also easy to forget that Jesus quenches the spiritual hunger of all who come to him and the spiritual thirst of all who believe in him (John 6:35). With this said, our next step should be to examine other scriptures that might provide steppingstones for our Christian walk.
Matthew 22:37 “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”
Jeremiah 32:38 “And they shall be my people, and I will be their God.”
Genesis 17:7 “I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.”
2 Peter 1:3 “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence ….”
James 1:17 “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights who does not change like shifting shadows.”
Ezekiel 36:26 “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.”
Ephesians 2:4-5 “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.”
Colossians 1:13-14 “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”
Colossians 1:17 “And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
In our battle with the world, the flesh, and the devil, it’s hard to maintain a steady walk on the straight and narrow path. When we remember that Christ is our firm foundation, as the referenced hymn declares, we know that we’re pointed to the best place to find more steppingstones for a steady walk. In fact, we realize that not only is Christ our unchanging foundation that is the same today, yesterday, and forever. He is also the Vine to whom we are connected as branches (John 15:5a). When we abide in Him, He promises that we will bear much fruit (John 15:5b). United with Jesus, we have the ultimate hope in that we have been raised to new life and are guaranteed to be delivered from the sting of death and from condemnation (John 5:24).
With that said, while during this life we’re tempted to follow and put our hope in the uncertain, we must remember to maintain our bearings in our walk by focusing on our union and communion with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, who together planned our redemption from eternity past and made an everlasting covenant to be our God. Truths like this can serve us well as steppingstones to keep us from stumbling as we walk with Christ on the treacherous paths of this world.
