Thoughts on Pride Month for 2023

Throughout the course of this month of June, which for the past several years has been deemed Pride Month, I have observed an assortment of posts on social media devoted to this topic and issue. I have been doing my best to look at this from the perspective of the whole counsel of God revealed in Scripture.

To start with, I won’t mince any words by saying the lifestyles that we are encouraged to ‘celebrate’ this month are an abomination in the Lord’s eyes. In fact, those who continue in these practices and fail to repent of them will face God’s wrath and judgement for all eternity.

Now, let’s be careful to add this: what also disturbs and grieves the Lord greatly are those times when we fail to remove the plank from our own eye before attempting to remove the splinter from our neighbor’s eye as Jesus taught. It is so easy to forget that we all have sinned and fall short of His glory. We are all sinners by nature, as we all have been conceived in iniquity. We continue to offend God in thought, word, and deed and we should all bow a knee before Him and plead for His forgiveness. Outside of God’s grace alone, secured by the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ alone on Calvary’s cross, we are all worthy of His eternal wrath.

Looking at this matter from the standpoint of the whole counsel of God, a certain New Testament passage comes to mind: John 7:53-8:11. There is much to unpack in this account. A woman allegedly caught in adultery was brought promptly before Jesus. Her accusers, the Jewish leaders of that day, attempted to tramp Jesus on this occasion as they often did. Though knowing the Jews could not administer capital punishment since this was something only the Roman officials could do, they insisted that the woman be stoned to death as Moses had commanded in the Law (John 8:5). Jesus responded to them by saying that whoever had never sinned should cast the first stone. He then went on to write in the dust. The woman’s accusers quickly slipped away upon hearing Jesus’s statement and seeing Him write in the dust. Many suggestions have been made to explain what Jesus wrote, but John does not tell us. What he does say is that when the accusers left the scene, Jesus proceeded to deal with the woman and to address her sin. Though being aware of her adulterous ways, out of mercy He assured her that He did not condemn her. At the same time, knowing the depravity of her sin, Jesus told her to go and sin no more (John 8:10-11).

Thankfully, God by His sovereign authority rules over all matters, including those that transpire during this month, which some have chosen to deem ‘Pride month.’ As we saw in the passage mentioned above, Jesus, the only righteous and flawless judge is best fit to address matters pertaining to sin and to grant forgiveness. Meanwhile, we rest assured that according to His revelation in Scripture, God has appointed a time when Jesus will return and pronounce judgement to us all based on His will for our lives.
