For quite some time those in Church have been asked if it is appropriate for Christians to engage in the political and civic arena. I have always given an astounding yes to this question. Not only that, I find no fault in supporting and even campaigning for a political candidate.
However, there are pitfalls that God’s people can and do fall into when advocating for a candidate and someone whom they support. It begins when a person fails to see their candidate in an objective manner. Furthermore, when they become defensive when they are presented with fault in their candidate. Problems further arise when they begin to justify and rationalize bad behavior on behalf of their candidate. What truly becomes problematic is when they begin attacking the opposition to their candidate and those who will not join them in supporting their candidate.
For those who claim to know and follow the Lord Jesus Christ, they begin to walk a path of becoming a false witness to Him when falling into these pitfalls.
It’s when members of Christ’s body fail to keep Him in the center of all aspects of their lives including those pertaining to their civic duties that the Church fails live up to her call of being salt and light to the world.
